When are the Salmon Flies  Going to Hatch on the Big Hole?

The hot topic around the shop is centered around the salmon fly hatch on the Big Hole River.  Mother Nature’s calendar seems to be two weeks ahead of normal with all of our other hatches thus far this year.  Warm days this weekend have leveled out the dropping Big Hole River.  It looks ready to rise a little again, but our wild guess as to when  the storied hatch begins is anywhere from later this week to 10 days away at the most.

Beaverhead River – The river is gin clear and fishing well..  Sowbugs and a few small olive patterns are catching fish near Clark Canyon Dam while small San Juan worms are producing the best as you move down river below High Bridge.

Big Hole River – The Big Hole has  been fishing very well the last week and we are collectively holding our breath in anticipation of the upcoming salmon fly hatch.  We’ll update our fishing reports frequently this week as conditions change.  A variety of flies are catching fish.  San Juan worms, streamers in a variety of color and Spanish bullets are all catching fish.
