We are excited to have the upper portion of the Beaverhead River open. Yesterday’s opener brought in a lot of anglers. Despite very low water releases, 127 cfs from Clark Canyon Dam, the fishing was good and the crowds behaved themselves for the most part. Angling pressure usually dissipates a few days after the opener.
Beaverhead River – The usual items are on the menu. A good assortment of sowbugs in gray and tan, small San Juan worms in natural and burgundy, BWO split backs, olive crystal benders and an assortment of midge larvae are all catching fish. The fish like to keep it interesting and the hot fly one day is not the next. Increasing flows from the dam usually prompts some ravenous feeding as the conveyor belt on the buffet speeds up.
Big Hole River – The Big Hole is fishing well with good visibility and not a lot of angling pressure. A variety of streamers and San Juan worms are catching fish. We have had some exceptional fishing there over the last 4-5 days. There are a few caddis still around, but not a lot of dry fly opportunities until the salmon flies make their appearance next month.
